Fun Science series wins
Children’s Award at 2017 Celtic Media Festival

TG4’s record for innovative and attractive young people’s TV was boosted today with the announcement that its fast-moving and fun-packed science series Is Eolaí Mé has taken the Children’s Award at the Celtic Media Festival 2017 which opened in Douglas, Isle of Man this evening.

The winning entry is a popular science series aimed at 8-12 year olds, a TV audience that is very discerning and has lots of TV channels competing for their attention.  The series encourages kids to get back to basics and learn how to investigate and explore the environment in which they live.  Based on the primary school science curriculum, the topics under discussion are presented in a fun and entertaining way. The series is action-packed and features studio, on-the-road reports, animated segments along with a short comic drama skit in each episode that highlights the theme or topic of the day.  It was produced for TG4 by independent company Meangadh Fíbín with financial support from  Broadcast Authority of Ireland’s Sound and Vision scheme.

The Celtic Media Festival (CMF) is one of the most prestigious and long-established TV, radio and media festivals in these islands. It combines a three-day media conference that attracts broadcasters, producers, media and students with a content competition across the full range of TV content genres. Entries go through a national pre-selection phase in each country announced in February with the winners advancing to the international Festival. (www.celticmediafestival.co.uk).    This year’s Festival is taking place in the Isle of Man for the first time in its 38 year history.

TG4 Head of Marketing and Development, Lís Ní Dhálaigh, congratulated the winning entry, saying that it was wonderful to have such international recognition for an often under-acknowledged part of the channel’s content offering. “All of us involved in children’s television realise the huge challenges of competing for audience with specialist and high-budget channels aimed solely at the younger audience,” she said “and an award like this for a series produced on a very modest budget, is fully deserved and really heartening.
